Surrounded by a park, Spreewiese Castle was built in the mid-16th century as the successor to a moated castle in the former village of Leichnam (today: Spreewiese). It is owned by the architect Paul Wehrle-Nielsen, who has renovated the buildings and uses them as a residence. The glass-roofed atrium of the castle, surrounded by white arcades, forms a magnificent backdrop for wedding ceremonies.

It could hardly be more idyllic. In the middle of the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve, in a district of the municipality of Großdubrau, lies a castle with the euphonious name of Spreewiese. It is nestled in a park with mature trees, several castle ponds and former farm buildings.
Due to its location close to nature, this gem is not only popular with walkers, but above all with wedding couples who say “I do” in the glass-roofed arcaded courtyard. The Renaissance-style atrium has been completely preserved and makes Schloss Spreewiese, which was known as Leichnam until 1911, a special architectural feature in the entire region. The richly ornamented window frames on the main façade are also unusual. Their exact cultural and historical significance has not yet been clarified. However, the current owner Paul Wehrle-Nielsen, who acquired Schloss Spreewiese in 1997 and had the listed manor house lovingly restored, suspects that it could be a depiction of symbols from the rural world of the Sorbs' settlement area at the time.
In addition to the von Nostitz family, who had today's castle built in the Renaissance style in the mid-16th century on the site of a moated castle first mentioned in 1443, its predecessors also included the Dresden councillor of justice Friedrich Caspar Count von Gersdorff. The progressive cousin of Count von Zinzendorf, on whose commitment the current UNESCO World Heritage Site “Herrnhut Settlement” can be traced back, had Spreewiese Castle rebuilt a good 70 years later and founded the Klix Latin School here. It is the first Latin school for the Sorbian population in the region. The family coat of arms of the von Gersdorffs still adorns the portal of the four-winged castle complex, which blends picturesquely into the characteristic landscape of the nature reserve near Bautzen.
If you want to spend more than just a day in the midst of this natural idyll and spend the night in style, you can also do so in the castle. In the midst of the historical ambience, there is a modern vacation apartment that can be rented for a romantic wedding night as well as for an excursion with family or friends.
